In today’s economy almost everybody is on a budget. When it comes to big expenditures getting a new home set up to live in, almost all of us have to pinch pennies – or at least watch them. While saving money is good, you have to be careful about what you scrimp on so that you don’t sacrifice quality in order to keep a few extra bucks in your jeans. The goal is a good life, so while you can easily save money by getting a modest barbecue instead of a fancy one, when it comes to the bed you sleep on it’s a good idea to pick up the best memory foam mattress you can.
How can you know whether a more expensive version of something is really worth the money? A good rule to apply is this: if the expensive version sells itself on quality, then it’s probably worth taking a good look at it. If it sells itself on gimmicks, then it’s probably not worth the premium price.
Expensive barbecues are almost always sold on gimmicks. There’s nothing complex about a barbecue. It’s a gas cook top covered by a grill and a dome to keep the heat in. Quality materials are vital in a barbecue, and that’s worth paying extra attention to. After all, you’re going to be eating what you cook on it, so a painted or nonstick grill is out. The grill should always be made of stainless steel, and the work should be good. Just look at the joints to see how well the grill is made. If you don’t like what you see then don’t buy it. The mechanism for moving the gas from the tank to the burner should be visible, easy to follow, and easy to use. A bad gas mechanism can burn your house down.
But beyond those simple basics, grill brands add on all kinds of bells and whistles in order to make their grill look like the best thing going – and as they add on features they add big money to the price. Some of these gimmicks are nothing but aesthetics. They might make your grill look cool, and if you’re one of those unfortunate guys who defines his manliness by the grill on your porch, they might be worth it. But cool can cost a pretty penny, and you might look better with a basic grill and a few hundred dollars still in your pocket.
Home furniture is another product that goes premium by adding gimmicks. In the case of furniture, the storefront itself can be a gimmick. If you’re on a cool urban walking street or wandering through a shopping mall in an upscale part of town, the furniture stores you see might look cool, but you aren’t going to take a hip storefront home with you and set it up in your living room. The quality of higher end furniture is often lower than that of mainstream furniture.
On the other hand, there are things that are worth the extra money for a premium version. When it comes to kitchen knives, for example, spend the money. There aren’t many ways to re-engineer a kitchen knife. There aren’t many gimmicks to add. The manufacturers of knives earn their reputation by making good knives, and the difference between cutting with a high quality knife and a low quality knife is night and day.
Spend the money on your bed, too. Some bed manufacturers and many bed retailers use gimmicks in order to drive sales. But these are mostly promotional gimmicks like in-store financing and absurd systems that supposedly tell you what kind of bed you should buy. For the most part, quality and price are connected in the bed marketplace, and if you buy a cheap one you’ll sleep cheap until you replace it.
If you know when to save money and when to spend it, you’ll end up improving the quality of your life. Get the best memory foam mattress and the best steak knives you can find, but save money where gimmicks define the difference between basic and premium. It’s as simple as that.
